Almost Ready to Celebrate (Maybe)

It's been a long 2 years, but... I think that this might actually be the time that I kick Citalopram to the curb for  good. I still don't know why getting off of it after Maggie has been so different than the boys, but I am very hopeful that this time will be successful and I can say goodbye to post-partum depression medication FOREVER! It's been about 5 very up and down weeks so far, but I've managed to get farther in the process this time than either attempt at weaning before now.

Interestingly the side effects to weaning off this medication are the same as the symptoms that lead you to take it in the first place. I am first in line to say that makes no sense at all. All it does is lead you to believe that you are heading back down the PPD road when it's part of the transition back to every day medication-free life. It takes strength and determination to make the decision to push through the negatives.

This time I went at it well armed for the fight. I began the weaning process very slowly. Half dosage for a month and then the half dose every other day for about another month. Now I haven't taken it in 5 weeks and I am mostly feeling okay. I've been through the headaches, sense of anxiousness for no reason, feeling lightheaded and crazy irritability. I'm hopeful that those are gone now for good. I still have nights where my body doesn't let me sleep. That has always been the symptom that forced me back onto the medication because I can't function after a week's worth of sleepless nights. But this time I am trying some homeopathic herbs that a relative made for me to help me sleep at night. So far so good. I only have to use it occasionally now so my body is slowly figuring out how to get back to its own normal.

I won't be jumping for joy and screaming that I am all better yet, but I am optimistic that I have made it through this battle and can now move on with my life. I have loved the having babies process, but dealing with the resulting PPD each time has taken a toll. It's time to be me again. I think I've earned that.

Another BIG Braeden Moment

Last Saturday was the annual Fun Run and Carnival at our elementary school. I had been trying to convince Braeden to participate in the Fun Run but for the most part he was uninterested. Until... they had an assembly at school promoting how fun it would be and that all kids who raced and crossed the finish line would receive a prize that others attending just the carnival would not. From that moment on, Braeden was in! He never looked back and was ready to go bright and early Saturday morning. He ran with a couple of friends and had a blast.

It's only a half mile but when you're six and not used to pacing yourself, it can be exhausting!

The pirate necklace was the participation prize.

He was so proud of himself and Roman and I were over the moon that he took the chance and ran. It was a fantastic day!

Teacher Appreciation Part 2

Monday was our big day of fun and activity for Teacher Appreciation Week, but we continued to acknowledge the teachers every day with raffle prizes and daily gifts. We also had several door prizes that were open to anyone in the building.

We also gave out magnets as the gift that day so that we wouldn't have to take up any space on the table. We have to keep the table free because Friday is the luncheon and our parents bring in amazing food to spoil the teachers for lunch.

One of my favorite parts of the whole week was having the students involved. When we talked about various ways to include the kids, we knew that we didn't want their participation to require purchasing anything or large projects that would take too much time to be fun. We settled on a daily schedule of having the students use various pieces of information about their teachers and then the class that had the highest percentage of participation at the end of the week won a trip to the Creamie! Our daily activities were simple and the kids and teachers all had a lot of fun in the process. 

• Monday: Wear your teacher's favorite color
• Tuesday: Bring in the title of a book about your teacher's favorite animal
• Wednesday: Draw a picture of your teacher celebrating his/her favorite holiday
• Thursday: Bring in a fact about the state (or country for the Canadian born teachers) where your teacher was born
• Friday: Create a math problem that has an answer equal to the number of years your teacher has worked at NES

Two classes ended up having 100% participation! It was such a fun week. Now, what to do next year??

Teacher Appreciation Week Part 1

Teacher Appreciation Week was a couple of weeks ago. This year Stacy and I decided to choose a theme and work the rest of the week from there. 

Our 2013 theme:

We began with our usual cleaning and decorating of the Staff Room on the Sunday evening before TA Week started. 

Monday was the day that the "great mystery" was solved for the students and staff. First thing in the morning the staff were greeted with the decorated staff room and their first daily gift and raffle prize along with a wonderful breakfast spread provided by a local store, Mim's Market, here in town. But that was just the beginning. We had been planning and preparing for an afternoon assembly for weeks! The secrecy had the teachers worried which made us laugh because it was a week all about celebrating them. Why would we throw water balloons at them?? Some really believed that something like that was in store..

But no, it was really a red carpet introduction!

Each teacher had a star banner on the wall that was moved to their classroom door after the assembly. They were introduced to deafening cheers and lots of hand slapping. Many teachers said they felt like rock stars. It was a ton of work, but to see the interaction between the staff and students was worth every single minute of preparation. Our Principal was fantastic as the emcee and did a Q&A game that we had created at the end so that we could all learn some new things about the teachers. They have done some really cool stuff!

A Magical Mother's Day

I don't ask for much because quite frankly I need very little. When Roman asked what I wanted for Mother's Day this year I told him probably some plants and mulch for my gardens. I had every intention of working in those gardens today, but after we were finished with church and breakfast I thought it might be fun to go on an somewhere instead. Kids love adventures and quite seriously, don't we all love an unplanned day trip? So I asked the kids where they wanted to go. It had to be out of state and someplace we don't go often. The original thought was that we'd go to the Lakes Region in New Hampshire, but since we all love any reason to go to the ocean, we agreed on the coast instead. I'm so glad we did because we had the BEST day!! It was so fun and relaxing and special and actually beyond words. I hope that we do something like this every Mother's Day because I enjoyed every minute.

The plan was to head to Southern Maine because along with the beach, I wanted to hit an outlet store or two. After all, it was my day. We stopped in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for lunch at BG's Boathouse. It's on the water and the kids were able to look at boats and throw rocks into the water while we waited. I'm not a huge seafood eater and most of their offerings were fried, but it was worth the experience just the same.

After that we traveled though Portsmouth to get into Maine. What a beautiful old historic city! The kids were amazed to see a submarine sticking up out of a hill beside the road. I've always traveled through Portsmouth but never actually stopped there. We are now planning to return for a visit to explore the city. All of these gems in our back yard. I love New England. 

Then we went to York Beach so that the kids could play and we could walk on the beach and take some pictures. I really thought there was no way that they would go into the water very much because it's still the beginning of May. In Maine. However, yet again they proved me wrong and spent an hour playing in the freezing water!

We were all sand and salt coated when we left. It was wonderful. The water was cold, but the air temperature was warm enough that no one was cranky and freezing by the end. It was an amazing way to spend Mother's Day. I hope the kids keep the memories of days like today locked inside and tell their children about them in the future. I believe we may have started a tradition today. And all because I get the honor of being three amazing little people's mom. 

Outdoor Fun

This morning I had big plans to get some projects and cleaning done around the house. But.. by 8:00 the kids all wanted to be outside and who am I to say no to fresh air and fun?

We dragged some of our cars down out of the garage attic.

They needed gas after a winter in storage..

We were playing some baseball when the t-ball shirts were dropped off for my team. Obviously Braeden had to change immediately into his "uniform" and pose for a picture. We have our first practice on Wednesday. Thank goodness. I don't think the kids could have waited another week!

Then Daddy came home from work and played a little basketball with us. 

We spent the afternoon playing with our friends who came over to visit. It is just delightful to finally be able to be outside every day. Tomorrow we are looking forward to a baseball game of girls vs. boys with The Thayer's. The kids have been talking about it for days!! 

A Fun-Filled Glorious Day

Today was a day that was simply glorious for me. It wasn't the warmest, though it was quite lovely, but it was filled with all things spring and reminders that the seasons are changing and summer fun is not that far away. I adore summer. Late nights, barbecues with friends, day trips, swimming, fresh vegetables from the garden.. It's just all good!

We started out this morning with a typical routine and it was even a bit chilly. After school drop-offs, Maggie and I headed to Five Acre, our local garden center, and picked up some bigger pots and soil so I could try to transplant the boys sunflowers that were grossly overtaking their teeny pots. We also got some extra sunflower seeds just in case the transplant was unsuccessful. Moms always need a back-up plan. After that we got some cleaning done and played outside. Swinging is my girls most favorite activity. I really think she'd do it for hours at a time if we let her. But let's be honest, no one wants to push a baby swing for hours. This afternoon Evan and I decided to create a new flower garden in the yard so that we had a place to plant our sunflowers when the nights get warm enough. He and Maggie and I found many worms who Evan decided needed to go live in their playhouse. I don't understand the things they do, but I sure do love to watch them explore and carry out their own plans. We played with worms for quite some time. If that doesn't say country folk, then I don't know what does. We also found some interesting rocks that sparkled in the sunlight. It was so much fun!

I intended to go pick Braeden up from school and come back home to finish creating the new "kids garden", but in not unusual fashion, we got sidetracked along the way and didn't make it home until dinner time. I knew that I needed a raffle prize to donate to Evan's school so we visited a local store, Dala Bird to find something wonderful. The owner there is such a lovely woman and she put together a really wonderful basket of goodies that I'd really love to keep for myself! Oh well, maybe I'll win it back. Then since the coffee shop is right there and all, it seemed like the perfect time for some ice coffee and lemonade. The kids then started begging to stop at Brayden and Riley's house to play since they still hadn't forgiven me for what they found to be my missing out on playing for them yesterday. We spent the rest of the afternoon playing baseball, shooting hoops and swinging. The weather was great and we had a blast. Then we finally returned home to finish our garden. I must admit, more worm playing was done. Braeden was just as interested in finding them new homes as the other two were earlier in the day.

What a wonderful day we had! I hope this is the real start of our outside season. Two days in a row of decent temperatures seems like a good sign. I am loving it and can't wait to get some flowers planted to keep all of those worms company!
